If a picture is worth 1,000 words, just think how thought-provoking 32 well-composed, beautifully-printed, and prominently-displayed images would be! That is exactly what you will experience at the Reg Erhardt Library between April 6th and April 20th as second-year students of SAIT’s photojournalism major program show what they can do with a camera.

The Photojournalism Showcase is the place where students in the photojournalism major show off their best work, from their two years in the Journalism program. But the show is much more than just an exhibit.

Each year students compete for top honours in two major award categories: The People’s Choice award, and the Photojournalist of the Year award.
The People’s Choice award is a yearly tradition in which the public is encouraged to peruse each of the 16 submissions, two from each student, and then vote for their favourite photographer.

The Photojournalist of the Year award is also given to the student who has demonstrated the most exceptional abilities, work ethic, and range of skills now required of today’s photojournalism practitioner. The award is adjudicated by the instructors.

Although there is a wide range of subject matter (sports events, political rallies, ceremonies, environmental portraiture, and breaking news), the one constant that a viewer can always count on is the revealing nature of the human condition in each and every frame. The ability of the still photograph to capture moments that elicit an emotional reaction from the viewer is still as powerful as ever.

So please come to the Erhardt Library this month, and sample our students’ work. Feel free to attend the awards ceremony, also in the library, on April 20, 2016 at 1:30pm. Every picture tells a story, and we all love stories, especially beautiful ones. We’ll see you there!

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, just think how thought-provoking 32 well-composed, beautifully-printed, and prominently-displayed images would be!
